3D Ultrasound Q & A

Newport Center Women's Health

What is 3D ultrasound?

3D ultrasound uses sound wave technology to project a full-color, real-time image of your baby on a computer screen. The sound waves from the transducer bounce off the fetus and the computer translates the echos into an image.

During a 3D ultrasound, you’re able to see your baby’s facial features and expressions. To the untrained eye, a 2D ultrasound can be difficult to understand, while a 3D ultrasound makes your baby easier to visualize.

Your 3D ultrasound at Newport Center Women’s Health also has 4D capabilities to capture your baby in motion. Unlike the 2D images, the 3D visuals and 4D movements give you the closest encounter with your baby until you meet in person.

What happens during a 3D ultrasound?

Generally, you don’t need to make any preparations before your 3D ultrasound, but you may want to wear comfortable clothes that are easy to remove. Your technician has you undress, put on a hospital gown, and lie comfortably on an exam table.

Your technician applies a lubricating gel to your abdomen and runs a transducer all around your belly to view your baby at various angles. They may ask you to adjust your position a few times and press the transducer into your skin to get clear images.

Throughout the course of the ultrasound, your technician stops to show you different features and explain what you’re seeing. You should be able to see the exact position your baby is in, see their facial features, and hear the heartbeat.

After your ultrasound, your technician prints black-and-white images of your baby for you on paper film. They also give you a USB copy of the 3D color images and 4D movements as a keepsake.

What are the benefits of 3D ultrasounds?

With the quality images it provides, 3D ultrasounds offer many advantages for expectant parents. Many mothers feel a sense of reassurance and renewed connection with their babies after seeing them up close and in motion.

Expectant parents also appreciate the treasured mementos they get to take home from the appointment. Meeting your baby in an ultrasound may be one of your family’s most memorable moments, and having a physical piece of your baby’s history is invaluable.

3D ultrasound is also very safe when performed by the skilled, board-certified technicians at Newport Center Women’s Health. They can schedule the service alongside your normal prenatal visits between 18-28 weeks.
